How ventilation is supposed to work
A balanced attic pulls cooler air in low, usually at soffits or intake vents near the eave, and lets hot air escape high, at ridge vents or other exhaust points. The system relies on both halves. Exhaust without intake has nothing to draw from, and intake without exhaust has nowhere to go.
What happens when it's unbalanced
- Attic temperatures climb, and heat radiates back into the underside of the roof deck
- Shingle asphalt ages faster from sustained heat exposure
- Moisture from bathrooms, kitchens and laundry lingers and can condense on sheathing
- Cooling systems work harder in summer
- Mixing incompatible exhaust types can cause one vent to pull air from another instead of from the soffits
Signs worth checking
- Insulation pushed over the soffit openings, blocking intake
- Painted-shut or debris-clogged soffit vents
- Dark staining or rust on nail tips visible in the attic
- Attic that feels dramatically hotter than the outside air on a summer afternoon
- Ridge vent installed with no corresponding intake at the eaves
What can usually be improved
Ventilation is often correctable without replacing the roof. Clearing blocked soffits, adding baffles to keep insulation off the intake path, or adjusting the exhaust arrangement can make a meaningful difference. Any change should be planned as a system rather than by adding more vents at random.
During a replacement, ventilation is the cheapest thing to get right and the most expensive thing to redo later.
- Ventilation needs both intake and exhaust to work at all.
- Blocked soffits are the most common and most fixable problem.
- Heat and trapped moisture age a roof from underneath.
- Don't mix exhaust types without a plan.
- Address ventilation during replacement, not after.
